The Team

The Trustworthy Voting Systems and SeRTVS Projects are currently developing the Prêt à Voter system. Below are details of some of the people working on these projects.

Academics

Profile picture of Dr James Heather

Dr James Heather - University of Surrey

Senior Lecturer

James Heather first started research on computer security in 1996, focusing at the time on the application of formal methods to the analysis of cryptographic protocols. His main area of research over the last few years has been on security aspects of electronic voting, and in 1997 he led the Surrey Prêt à Voter team to win the "Best Design" prize at VoComp, an international voting systems competition. James is Surrey's Principal Investigator on the Trustworthy Voting Systems project, and a RAEng/Leverhulme Senior Research Fellow on the Secure Real-World Elections project.

Prof. Steve Schneider - University of Surrey

Professor

Steve Schneider has been researching in concurrency theory since 1988, and its application to formal modelling and verification of security protocols since 1995. More recently he has become interested in secure electronic voting, and became involved in the Prêt à Voter voting system at an early stage of its development. He is currently interested in the design of the Prêt à Voter prototypes with emphasis on public trust and usability, and in extending Prêt à Voter to allow remote voting.

Researchers

Profile picture of Dr Chris Culnane

Dr Chris Culnane - University of Surrey

Research Fellow

Chris's PhD was in Digital Watermarking of Binary Text Documents in a manner robust to printing and scanning. His research focus on this project is in both the User Interface design and the implementation of a scalable trustworthy voting system. His work on the user interface will combine both capturing votes entered on paper ballots and the development of innovative, accessible, user interfaces.
Profile picture of Sriram Srinivasan

Dr Sriramkrishnan Srinivasan (Sriram) - University of Surrey

Research Fellow

Sriram received a BE in Electronics and Instrumentation from the University of Madras and an MSc with distinction in Information Security from Royal Holloway, which he attended on a Chevening Scholarship. He was a research intern at British Telecom's Information Security Research Centre at Adastral Park in Ipswich, where he concentrated on Network Resilience studies. He then obtained a PhD in Cryptography, under the supervision of Prof. Kenneth G. Paterson, at Royal Holloway, University of London. His thesis titled "New Security Notions for Identity Based Encryption" was supported by a Dorothy Hodgkin Scholarship. Sriram's research interests center around cryptography and he is investigating the core cryptographic ideas employed in electronic voting with a view towards an implementation that is practical and scalable. Profile picture of Dr Zhe Xia

Dr Zhe Xia (Joson) - University of Surrey

Research Fellow

Zhe Xia is a Research Fellow in the Department of Computing at the University of Surrey. He received the BSc degree in 2004 from Wuhan University, China. Later, he received the MSc degree in 2005, and the PhD degree in 2009, both from the University of Surrey, UK. Zhe Xia's research interests are in the information security area, particularly secure electronic voting. His work on this project is to design and analyse the trustworthy voting systems.

David Bismark - University of Surrey

Past PhD Student

David Bismark earned his Doctor of Philosophy degree in 2010 from the University of Surrey in the UK for his research in Verifiable Electronic Voting and holds Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees from the same university. He lives in Stockholm, Sweden, where he is the managing director of the publishing house Recito Förlag. David combines a love for books with a strong base in Information Technology to play his part in shaping the future of the country's publishing industry. Frequently working from home, a favourite pastime is taking funny pictures of his cat.
